The Barn Theatre[1] is a theatre in the United Kingdom with charitable status. Established in 2018, the theatre is a converted 1940s Nissen hut beside the River Churn located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England. The theatre was launched by former actor, Iwan Lewis[2], and its celebrity ambassadors are Matthew Kelly, Jerry Mitchell, Heida Reed[3], James Dreyfus and Daisy May Cooper[4]. Since opening, the theatre's collaborations have included Sir Michael Morpurgo[5], Rory Bremner[6] and The Theatre Chipping Norton.

The Barn Theatre was awarded the 2019 The Stage Awards Fringe Theatre of the Year.[7]

Productions

The Secret Garden (2018)

The Barn Theatre's first production was an actor-musician revival of the musical The Secret Garden. The musical was directed by Dominic Shaw with musical supervision by John Quirk and design by PJ McEvoy. The cast featured David Haydn as Archibald Craven, Jaimie Pruden as Lily Craven, Minal Patel as Neville Craven, Daniella Piper as Mary Lennox, Celeste De Veazey as Colin Craven, Jenny O'Leary as Martha, Alex James Ellison as Dickon, Sue Appleby, Steffan Rizzi, Jamie Ross, Celia Cruwys Finnigan and Ben Boskovic.

One Minute (2018)

The Barn Theatre's second production was a new production of Simon Stephens' play One Minute.[8] The production was directed by Artistic Director Iwan Lewis with movement direction by Sean Hollands, design by PJ McEvoy, composition and sound design by Harry Smith and projection design by Benjamin Collins. The cast featured Sophie May Wake as Marie Louise Burdett, Sarah Hanly as Catherine Denham, Rebecca Crankshaw as Dr Anne Schults, Jack Bence as DC Robert Evans and Garry Summers as DI Gary Burroughs.

Iwan Lewis was nominated for Best Director at the 2018 The Stage Debut Awards for this production.[9]

The Rise and Fall of Little Voice (2018)

The Barn Theatre's third production was a revival of Jim Cartwright's play The Rise and Fall of Little Voice.[10] The production was directed by Michael Strassen and the cast featured Sarah Louise Hughes as Little Voice, Stephen Omer as Mr Boo/Phone Man, Gary Richards as Ray, Hadley Brown as Billy, Gillian McCafferty as Mari and Larissa Hunter as Sadie.

Hound of the Baskervilles (2018)

The Barn Theatre's fourth production was a new production of the stage adaptation of Hound of the Baskervilles. The play, written by John Nicholson and Steven Canny for Peepolykus, was directed by Joseph O'Malley with design by Elin Steele, lighting design by Sam Rowcliffe-Tanner and sound design by Christopher Cleal. The cast featured Herb Cuanalo as Sherlock Holmes, Hywel Dowsell as Dr Watson and Dominic Brewer as Sir Henry Baskerville.

Just So (2018)

The Barn Theatre's fifth production was a new actor-musician production of the George Stiles and Anthony Drewe musical Just So. The musical, inspired by the stories of Rudyard Kipling, was directed by Kirk Jameson with new orchestrations by Nick Barstow, choreography by Joanna Goodwin and set design by Ryan Dawson Laight. The cast featured Lewis Cornay as Elephant's Child, Molly Lynch as Kolokolo Bird, Duncan Drury as Eldest Magician, Dylan Wynford as Jaguar, Grant Urquart as Leopard, Evie Rose Lane as Stove, Imogen Halsey as Giraffe, Kiran Patel as Parsee, Rosalind Ford as Zebra, Michaela Stern as Rhino and Matthew Kelly as the voice of the giant crab Pau Amma.

The Butterfly Lion (2019)

The Barn Theatre's sixth production was a new production of Daniel Buckroyd's stage adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's children's novel The Butterfly Lion.[11] The play was directed by Jessica Daniels with puppet design and direction by Maia Kirkman-Richards, set and costume design by Lizzy Leech and composition and musical direction by Anna Clock. The cast featured Jasper William Cartwright as Michael/Bertie, Jonathan Charles as Lion, Jeremy Cobb as Merlot, Hilary Harwood as Millie, Henry Douthwaite as Father and Abigail Matthews as Mother.

Henry V (2019)

The Barn Theatre's seventh production was a new production of William Shakespeare's play Henry V.[11] The reimagined production was directed by Hal Chambers with fight direction by Christos Dante, design by Emily Leonard, movement direction by Kate Webster, composition and sound design by Harry Smith, lighting design by Sam Rowcliffe-Tanner, sound design by Christopher Cleal and projection design by Benjamin Collins. The cast featured Aaron Sidwell as Henry, Lauren Samuels as Katharine/Boy, Alicia Charles as Bardolph/Williams, Adam Sopp as Pistol/Constable, Elin Phillips as Fluellen, Jonathan Woolf as Nym/Dauphin, Matt Ray Brown as Exeter/Orleans and Sarah Waddell as Queen of France.[12][13]

Benjamin Collins received a Best Projection Design nomination for the 2019 BroadwayWorld UK Regional Awards for this production.[14]

The 39 Steps (2019)

The Barn Theatre's eighth production was a new revival production of Patrick Barlow's play The 39 Steps.[11] The production was directed by Joseph O'Malley with design by Mike Leopold. The cast featured Max Hutchinson as Richard Hannay and Tricia Adele-Turner as Annabella Schmidt/Pamela/Margaret with Jonathan Bourne and Colin Elmer as the two clowns.

The production transferred to the Theatre Royal, Windsor in August 2019.[15]

Daddy Long Legs (2019)

The Barn Theatre's ninth production was the first British-produced production of the musical Daddy Long Legs.[11] The musical was directed by Kirstie Davis with design by Gregor Donnelly and musical direction by Charlie Ingles.The cast featured Rebecca Jayne-Davies as Jerusha Abbott and Ryan Bennett as Jervis Pendleton.[16]

A Christmas Carol (2019)

The Barn Theatre's tenth production was Alan Pollock's new version of the Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol.[11] The play, directed by Phil Bartlett, featured music and lyrics by Finn Anderson, movement direction by Lucie Pankhurst, design by Sophia Pardon, lighting design by Sam Rowcliffe-Tanner, sound design by Harry Smith, illusions by Tom Brace and projection design by Benjamin Collins. The production starred Laurence Olivier Award nominee Patrick Ryecart in the role of Ebenezer Scrooge.[17] The cast also featured Bronte Alice-Tadman, Jonathan Charles, Tom Chudley-Evans, Laura Coates, Connor Going, Nuwan Hugh Perera, Grace Liston[18] and Rosie Zeidler.

The Importance of Being Earnest (2020)

The Barn Theatre's eleventh production will be a new production of Oscar Wilde's play The Importance of Being Earnest.[5] The play, directed by Bryan Hodgson, will feature lighting design by Sam Rowcliffe-Tanner and sound design by Harry Smith. A previous incarnation of the production played at the Barn Theatre in early 2019. The cast will feature Ryan Bennett as Graham de Hare and Aidan Harkins as Kevin McKinnon.

The production will transfer to the Turbine Theatre at Battersea Power Station, London in February 2020.[19][20]

Ben Hur (2020)

The Barn Theatre's twelfth production will be a new production of Patrick Barlow's play Ben Hur.[5] This will mark the second Patrick Barlow play produced at the Barn Theatre. The production will be directed by Joseph O'Malley with set design by Justin Williams, costume design by Penn O'Gara, choreography by Zak Nemorin, lighting design by Sam Rowcliffe-Tanner and Justin Farndale and sound design by Harry Smith. The cast comprises of James Dinsmore, Liam Horrigan, Devarnie Lothian and Bronte Tadman.[21]

Jeeves and Wooster in Perfect Nonsense (2020)

In 2019, the Barn Theatre and The Theatre Chipping Norton announced their first co-production, a 2020 UK tour of David and Robert Goodale's play Jeeves and Wooster in Perfect Nonsense.[5] The production, directed by The Theatre Chipping Norton's Artistic Director John Terry, features design by Alex Marker, lighting design by Christopher Nairne, movement direction by Bronya Deutsch and composition by Eamonn O'Dwyer. The cast features Matthew Cavendish as Bertie Wooster, Andrew Ashford as Jeeves and Andrew Cullum as Seppings.[22] The tour begins at The Theatre Chipping Norton in February 2020.

The Mozart Question (2020)

The Barn's fourteenth production will be a new stage adaptation by Vicki Berwick of Michael Morpurgo's children's novel The Mozart Question.[5][23]

The production will transfer to the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham in June 2020.[24]

Brigadoon (2020)

The Barn Theatre's fifteenth production will be an actor-musician revival of the Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe musical Brigadoon.[5][23]

The Turn of the Screw (2020)

The Barn Theatre's sixteenth production will be a new stage adaptation of Henry James' 1898 horror novella The Turn of the Screw.[5]

The Brothers Grimm Present: Cinderella (2020)

The Barn Theatre's seventeenth production will be Alan Pollock's play The Brothers Grimm Present: Cinderella.[5]
