Barney Google is a character created by Billy DeBeck in 1919. He is the former protagonist of the comic strip Barney Google and Snuffy Smith. He is depicted as a "goggle-eyed, moustached, gloved and top-hatted, bulbous-nosed, cigar-chomping shrimp" (according to comics historian Bill Blackbeard). Barney, along with his racehorse Spark Plug were among the most popular characters of the 1920s. In 1934, however, a hillbilly-like Appalachian character named Snuffy Smith was introduced to the strip. Eventually, Snuffy eclipsed Barney in popularity, and by 1954, the strip officially titled Snuffy as its new protagonist. Barney rarely made appearances in the strip afterward, becoming a semi-regular character in 2012.[1][2][3]
