Barron News-Shield has a very rich history. It is the 2nd oldest newspaper of the Barron County after the Barron County Gazette. It was founded on Nov. 1, 1876, by A. Dewey.[6] 1876 can be said as the perfect year for the newspaper to launch as it had a lot of historical events like the death of Wild Bill Hickok while playing poker, Battle of Little Bighorn and the invention of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell.

Barron County News-Shield as a name came in effect with the merger of Barron News Shield with the Barron County News in 1918. However, the word County was dropped in the 1970s.[6]

It was acquired by the Bell, Press, Inc (now Ovid Bell Press Group) in 1979. Ladysmith News is its sister newspaper. Jim Bell and Mark Bell represent the 4th and the 5th generation of the same family to publish the paper.

Coverage[edit]

The newspaper has been known for its Police Beat section where it focuses on Crime and Legal stories. These stories involve are sometimes crowd-sourced through the readers.[7] Bob Zientara is the most famous reporter of this paper.[8]
