Barry Brewer
Barry Brewer is an American comedian, actor, writer, director, producer, musician and motivational speaker. He began his career as a stand-up comedian in 2002 and garnered his early success from televised comedy competitions such as Bill Bellamy's Who's Got Jokes on TV One[1] alongside his peers, Tiffany Haddish and Lil Rel Howery. Brewer is most recently known for his roles on BET’s Tyler Perry's Bruh,[2][3] BET’s Games People Play,[4][5][6] and Kevin Hart's Guide to Black History on Netflix.[7]
Early life
Brewer was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, raised between the church and the streets.[8] He found stability in his grandfather, Big Jim, who picked him up for church every weekend. After the passing of his grandfather, Brewer sought refuge in the church.[9]
Career
Stand-up
Upon receiving a standing ovation after his first performance, Brewer began his stand-up career in 2002. He has also appeared on a number of televised stand-up comedy competitions and showcases on networks such as Comedy Central,[10] BET,[8] TruTV and TV One,[1] among others.
Brewer released his debut stand-up comedy special, Barry Brewer: Chicago I'm Home in 2019, which was filmed at Chicago's Studebaker Theater and featured musical guest Mali Music.[11] The comedy special was also featured again on the CW’s special The CW Happy Hour, which aired it as a part of 7 hours of comedy in 2020.[12]
In 2019, Brewer produced a sold-out nationwide stand-up comedy tour with his counterparts Bigg Jah and Minks called The Whole Crew is Stupid.[13] The Whole Crew is Stupid is derived from the viral series titled When the Whole Crew Is Stupid, originally conceived by Jahdai “Bigg Jah” Pickett.[14]
Film and television
In 2015, Brewer wrote, directed and produced his second short film entitled, The Perfekt Plan starring himself and the late Thomas Mikal Ford.[15]
In 2019, he directed and starred in the web series The Perfect Plan.[16]
He was also cast in a recurring role as Eric Rowland in BET's drama, Games People Play.[5][6]
The same year, Brewer was featured in Kevin Hart's Guide to Black History where he played the role of Matthew Henson, a Harvard-educated African American who is credited as the first person to reach the North Pole.[7]
Brewer stars as John Watts in Tyler Perry's Bruh.[3][2] The show debuted on BET+ in 2020.[17]
Music
As a songwriter and producer, Brewer has worked with artists such as Brandy, Ray J and Tank.[18][9] Brewer has recorded two studio albums including his solo album Dive In[19] in 2015 and the inspirational Pop/R&B album Conquer Goliath in 2020.[20][21]
