Barry Hughes (born 18 November 1978) is a Scottish former professional boxer who competed in the lightweight division from 1998 to 2007. Fighting out of Glasgow, Hughes compiled a record of 17 wins, 3 losses, and 1 draw across 21 professional bouts, and challenged for the WBU Inter-Continental Lightweight Title.
Early life and amateur career
Barry Hughes was born on 18 November 1978 in Glasgow, Scotland. He grew up in the city and took up boxing through the amateur club system before turning professional in late 1998.
Professional career
Early professional years (1998–2000)
Hughes turned professional on 7 December 1998, suffering a points loss to Woody Greenway on debut at the Town Hall in Acton, London. He responded by winning his next ten consecutive bouts, all by stoppage, fighting primarily at Glasgow venues including the Thistle Hotel and Kelvin Hall. Opponents defeated during this period included Leon Dobbs, Gareth Dooley, Des Sowden, Tony Smith, Brendan Ahearne, Jason Vlasman, Nono Junior, Gary Flear, Billy Smith, and Dave Travers.
Establishing years (2002–2004)
After a period of inactivity, Hughes returned in 2002 and avenged his debut defeat with a points win over Woody Greenway in March 2002. He then stopped Asen Vasilev by KO and Paul McIlwaine by TKO later that year. In May 2003, Hughes suffered a corner retirement loss to Martin Watson at the Thistle Hotel. He returned in early 2004, defeating Peter McDonagh and Brian Coleman on points.
WBU Inter-Continental title challenge (2004)
Hughes' most significant professional engagement came on 28 May 2004, when he challenged Charles Shepherd for the WBU Inter-Continental Lightweight Title at the Thistle Hotel, Glasgow. The contest resulted in a majority draw, a creditable result for Hughes at championship level. He followed up with a TKO win over Nigel Senior at Braehead Arena in June 2004.
Later career (2006–2007)
After a further absence, Hughes returned in November 2006 with a points win over Baz Carey at Kelvin Hall. His final professional bout came on 17 November 2007 at the Bellahouston Leisure Centre in Glasgow, where he was stopped by TKO by Georgian lightweight Nugzar Margvelashvili. Hughes did not compete again and retired with a record of 17 wins (10 by stoppage), 3 losses, and 1 draw from 21 contests.
Boxing style
Hughes fought in the orthodox stance and was an aggressive pressure fighter. He was an effective finisher, with 10 of his 17 victories coming by knockout or technical knockout.
