Basant Kumar Meghwal
Basant Kumar Meghwal (born 2007) is an Indian track and field athlete specializing in the high jump, who competes representing the Indian Navy. Hailing from Anupgarh, a border town in Sri Ganganagar district of Rajasthan, he is trained by former Indian women's high jump national record holder Sahana Kumari.[1]
Meghwal made a breakthrough in 2026, winning the gold medal at the Asian U20 Athletics Championships in Hong Kong with a clearance of 2.20 metres. At the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, he became the first Indian athlete to win a high jump medal at the junior world championships, clearing a personal-best of 2.21 meters to claim the silver medal — with the final standings decided on countback, behind Algeria's Younes Ayachi and ahead of Great Britain's Otis Poole. His achievement came after a remarkable improvement of 10 centimeters in his personal best over a single season, from 2.11 meters to 2.21 meters.[2]
Meghwal's success has drawn attention to the growing depth of Indian athletics beyond traditional sporting centres, with his rise from a small border town in Rajasthan to a World Championships podium seen as emblematic of India's expanding junior athletics talent pool under the Athletics Federation of India's development programmes.[3]
