Baseless Toasting Goblets

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Baseless Toasting Goblet. A wine glass or goblet with no base ; which cannot be stood in the normal way. The reason for not having a base is to force the holder to hold the glass during the toast and then drink all the contents before replacing the goblet upside-down on a flat surface ; rather like signifying " that's the end of the matter ; there is no going back ; it's final " . ( Compare the Greek tradition of breaking plates after a meal ) . This is to re-inforce the sentiments of the toast. There is a notch between the bowl of the glass and the top of the stem . A tray with suitably-sized slots is designed to hold a number of goblets. The goblets are held in the slots ; and are then filled with wine. The goblets are handed to guests, who must perforce hold them during a speech. To toast the recipients the guest must drink all of the contents of the glass before being able to relieve himself of the goblet by standing it upside-down. Possibly used ceremonially at funerals.
