Bass Player's 100 Greatest Bass Players
"The 100 Greatest Bass Players" was a special collector's issue of American magazine Bass Player, issue number Vol. 28, No. 2, published in February 2017 by NewBay Media.[1] It features a list of the 100 greatest bass players of all time, and was compiled by a selected group of writers and editors who had regularly contributed to the magazine during its 28 year history. The magazine's standing as a widely-read authority in the field of bass[2] made the list notable and fairly definitive, though subjective.
According to the magazine, the criteria used for compiling the list included each candidate's influence, impact, innovation and technical ability within the context of their era. The list also placed certain limitations on eligibility, and included only candidates who were non-classical players after 1900. Upright and electric bassists were considered, but keyboard bass players were not. The magazine's website version of the story slightly expanded the original title to "The 100 Greatest Bass Players of All Time".[3]
