BASTA, Inc. is a "non-profit" organization with staff attorneys that represent tenants in eviction cases. BASTA, Inc. is a California public benefit corporation and federally registered, tax-exempt, non-profit organization that specializes in tenants' rights and advocacy. Over the past several years, BASTA has developed into one of the premier tenants rights organizations in Southern California and is a proud, front-line soldier in the fight to eliminate substandard housing. BASTA provides legal representation to low income individuals and families facing eviction.[1] Prior to BASTA, eviction cases were typically decided in an administrative hearing by a judge. By demanding a jury trial, BASTA significantly increased the cost and length of time for an eviction, motivating many landlords to settle rather than accept the costs and risks of a jury trial. BASTA services include homelessness prevention in the form of aggressive representation tenants, both inside and outside of the courtroom and also seek to eradicate slum housing conditions by working with other non-profit organizations, advocacy groups, and Los Angeles’ Housing Department in order to bring buildings up to code and make them habitable to live in. BASTA only represents tenants (never landlords) and provides low cost services and free consultations.[2] BASTA, when translated into Spanish, means "Enough". BASTA is among one of the best Landlord Tenant Attorneys in the Long Beach Area.[3]
History[edit]
Daniel J. Bramzon founded Basta, Inc. in 2004. Daniel was born in Miami, Florida. He is a graduate of the University of Chicago Law School and Stanford University. He was admitted to the State Bar Of California in 2001. He is an attorney in Los Angeles, and founder of BASTA, Inc. He is credited with being one of the first attorneys in California to routinely demand jury trials for unlawful detainer actions, which would have previously routinely been a bench trial. He resigned from the law firm and started his own private law practise which is named as Law Office Of Daniel J. Bramzon & Associates. Soon after he founded Basta, Inc.
Notable Programs[edit]
Since its foundation in 2004, Basta, Inc. has been fighting for tenants rights.[4] It revolutionized the eviction-defence industry by providing free legal advise to low-income tenants.[5] "Our attorneys have been offered $50,000 bribes," Bramzon told USC Law students, "Our attorneys have been imprisoned. Our attorneys have been assaulted while … examining properties."[6]

Homelessness prevention[edit]
Tenants fortunate enough to afford legal representation have a far greater chance of successfully upholding their rights and defeating an eviction. BASTA saves over 1,000 families a year, who might otherwise go unrepresented, from eviction and homelessness every year. We are well known for providing these families with due process and resurrecting their right to a jury trial in eviction cases, which increase the chances of a tenant successfully fighting an eviction.
Slum housing eradication[edit]
Slums have been historically linked to epidemics. BASTA is trying its best to eradicate the slum housing.
Relocation assistance[edit]
To the extent it is available, BASTA assists displaced tenants (whether eviction, fire, or other causes) obtain financial assistance for rental subsidies, moving expenses, and/or general relocation help. In certain situations, BASTA has itself provided such help to displaced tenants.
Advocacy[edit]
BASTA advocates before state and local governments for strengthening the laws that protect tenants and improve apartment conditions throughout Los Angeles.
Education[edit]
BASTA provides education outreach and financial counseling to help tenants understand the root causes of eviction and homelessness, as well as their rights as tenants under local rent control ordinances and state law.
Community engagement[edit]
BASTA assists its clients in becoming productive members of society through a variety of social, cultural and educational activities.
