Template:Campaignbox Irish Rebellion of 1798The battle of Hacketstown was a battle in the Irish Rebellion of 1798, which took place on 25 June 1798 when a large force of Irish rebels led by Garrett Byrne, Michael Dwyer and Michael Reynolds attacked the garrison at the small town of Hacketstown near the border with County Wicklow in an attempt to destroy the military barracks and to take it's firearms and ammunition[1].
When the garrison spotted the approaching rebels they took position on high ground outside the town in an attempt to repel them by concentrated volley fire. However, the rebels, by now used to military tactics, split into different groups to attack from several sides and surround the troops. The garrison quickly then withdrew to the stone walled barracks, abandoning the rest of the town to the rebels. The barracks was subjected to persistent attack but the rebels, lacking any artillery, were unable to take the building. Eventually after nine hours the rebels withdrew leaving the town in flames. Michael Reynolds, leader of the attack on Naas on 24th May [2] died a few days later] having been wounded in the fighting. After this the military abandoned the town and retreated to the safety of Tullow.
