The Action at Holitz was a rearguard engagement of the Seven Years' War fought on 11–12 July 1758 near Holitz (modern Holice, Czech Republic). The action occurred during the 1758 campaign after the failed Siege of Olomouc, as Frederick the Great's Prussian army withdrew from Moravia. Austrian forces under Ernst Gideon von Laudon attacked Prussian troops commanded by James Francis Edward Keith.[1]
Background
In 1758, Prussian forces under Frederick the Great invaded Moravia and attempted to capture Olomouc from the Habsburg monarchy. After the siege failed, the Prussian army began a difficult retreat while Austrian forces harassed and slowed the Prussian withdrawal to Silesia.[1]
Engagement
The Austrian attack at Holitz was part of the wider pursuit of the retreating Prussian army after Olomouc.[2]
