Battle of Ka Nak
The Battle of Ka Nak was a battle fought during the Vietnam War at Ka Nak, Gia Lai province.
Ka Nak was originally a military base of the United States and the Republic of Vietnam located between An Khê and Bình Định, used to train soldiers and prevent the communications of the Viet Cong in the Central Highlands and the south, near the South Central Coast. To remove this barricade, the Command of Military Region V and the Central Highlands Front mobilized the 409th Commando Battalion, the 10th Infantry Regiment and two local companies to attack this stronghold from the night of 7 March to the end of dawn on 8 March. However, when the commando had not yet cut the barbed wire to open the breakthrough, it was revealed, and machine gun fire, mortar and heavy artillery bombarded. As a result, the attack was unsuccessful and about 200 soldiers of the Liberation Army were killed (of which 136 bodies were left behind). After the battle, the South Vietnamese used bulldozers to cover the bodies of these soldiers under the trenches.
On 27 July 2009, Gia Lai province inaugurated the Ka Nak Martyrs' Memorial in K'Bang district to commemorate the Viet Cong soldiers who died in this battle.[1]
