The Battle of Khed was fought between Chhatrapati Shahu and Tarabai on 12 October 1707.

Brief history

The Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb passed away in 1707 in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra. Aurangzeb's sons Bahadur Shah, Muhammed Azam Shah and Muhammed Kam Baksh fought for the throne in Delhi. This war of succession was won by Bahadur Shah I. The Maratha kingdom under Tarabai who was the regent of her son Chhatrapati Shivaji II and other sardars like Santaji Ghorpade and Dhanaji Jadhav had captured a big part of the Mughal kingdom. Thinking that a civil war will break out for the kingdom Bahadur Shah Ireleased Shahu.

The civil war

When Shahu returned to Maharashtra he asked for his share of kingdom from Tarabai who refused to give him some part of of the kingdom. Shahu decided to wage a war against Tarabai but he had inexperienced but loyal sardars with him like Balaji Vishwanath whereas Tarabai had experienced and loyal sardars like Santaji Ghorpade and Dhanaji Jadhav.The forces of Chhatrapati Shivaji II ( Tarabai's infant son ) and Shahu met on 12 October 1707 in Khed. In this battle Tarabai was defeated.

The outcome

Tarabai's forces had to retreat to Kolhapur who ruled from there henceworth. Shahu captured Satara and proclaimed himself as Chhatrapati he made Balaji Vishwanath the peshwa for his loyalty and for helping him defeat Tarabai.
