The Battle of Kutais, occurring in the year 883 AD, marked a significant clash between the Byzantine forces, led by Bagrat I of Abkhazia, and the Kingdom of Abkhazia. This historic event unfolded as part of Bagrat's strategic campaign to invade and occupy the Kingdom of Abkhazia, following a coup in 871 AD by John Shavliani.

Background

Facing a coup in 871 AD by John Shavliani, Bagrat narrowly escaped an assassination attempt through drowning. Seeking refuge in Constantinople, he planned his return to the kingdom, determined to regain his rule.[citation needed]

Battle

The confrontation took place in Kutais, the capital city of the Kingdom of Abkhazia. The clash between the Byzantine forces and the Abkhazians resulted in a decisive victory for Bagrat I of Abkhazia. Kutais was successfully occupied, and during the battle, Adarnase of Abkhazia, the son of John Shavliani, fell into the hands of Bagrat.[citation needed]

Outcome

Tragically for Adarnase, the captured king faced a dire fate as Bagrat, intent on fully regaining control, ordered Adarnase's execution. The Battle of Kutais not only shifted territorial control and allowed Bagrat to rule Abkhazia, causing the rule of the Shavliani Dynasty to come to an end.[1][2][3][4]
