The Battle of Orurillo was the last confrontation between the Bolivian occupation forces and Peruvian militias within the framework of the war between Peru and Bolivia in April 1842. The Peruvian victory finally allowed the last Bolivian troops to be expelled from Peruvian territory.
Background
The battle took place on April 3, 1842, in Orurillo, Puno, Peru. The Peruvian forces were led by Pablo Pimentel and Mariano Macedo, while the Bolivian forces were commanded by José Ballivián and Juan Landívar.
Outcome
The Peruvian victory had a decisive influence on the success of the peace negotiations and led to the withdrawal of Bolivian troops from southern Peru. However, the battle also resulted in the Orurillo massacre by Peruvian Army *montoneras* and civilians. The Treaty of Puno was signed following this battle, solidifying Peru's control over the territory.
Casualties
The Peruvian forces consisted of 250 men, while the Bolivian forces had 300 men. The Bolivian side suffered significant casualties, with 200 killed and 100 captured (of which 75 were executed and 25 taken prisoner).
