The battle of Procida was a naval engagement between the Kingdom of Naples and the United Kingdom that took place on June 26, 1809 in the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the channel that separates the archipelago of the Pitecusa (Ischia, Vivara and Procida) from the Phlegrean Peninsula, constituting the point of northernmost entrance to the famous Gulf of Naples.
Battle[edit]
The Neapolitan navy under the command of Giovanni Bausan with 47 gunboats, 1 frigate and 1 corvette confronted Anglo-Bourbon coastal ships, the frigate HMS Cyane (Captain Thomas Staines) and the brig HMS Espoir (Captain Robert Mitford), together with 12 other Sicilian gunboats in an attempt to blockade the Neapolitans.
Caracciolo had 8 ships sunk, 5 captured and 18 beached, sinking the brig and 1 small ship instead.[1][2]
