In February-March 1919, an uprising started in Kars, which spread to Akhaltsikhe-Akhalkalaki. It aimed to create the "Southwest Caucasus Republic", which was actually a Turkish political entity. In the territory of Georgia this rebellion was led by Server-Beg Atabag and many Muslim Georgians took part in it.[2] Giorgi Kvinitadze was involved and succeeded in restoring order in the disorganized Georgian troops and then launched an attack against Beys.[3]
