Batushka

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Batushka (Russian for "Father", in the religious context) is a Polish black metal band formed in 2015. While the band is Polish, their lyrics, imagery, and motif are Russian, and the band's name and album content adheres to a largely Russian Christian Orthodox concept. Their first and only album "Litourgia", ("Litany"), draws lyrics from a Russian Orthodox bible.

Pronounced "Batjushka", the band's Cyrillic name Батюшка means "father" and is used to address an Eastern Orthodox priest. Despite their themes and imagery, they are not a Christian band.

The identities of the members are unknown, but it is believed[1] that they are established musicians who are involved with other bands. It has been suggested that Behemoth's Nergal may be a member[2].

Their live line-up contains 8 members.[3]

Albums

The band's first and only offering, Litourgia, drew mostly positive reviews[4],

"Litourgiya is hands down the best debut of 2015 and is battling with Mgła's Exercises In Futility for the title of black metal album of the year. And it probably beats it."[5]

In October or 2017, it was announced that Batushka would be joining Metal Blade Records[6]
