Be Mindful is a digital course designed to improve mental wellbeing by Wellmind Health Ltd, a British online healthcare company founded in Brighton in 2002.[1] Wellmind Health originally created the course in partnership with The Mental Health Foundation in 2011. However, Wellmind Health bought out the Mental Health Foundation from the partnership in 2019, resulting in Be Mindful being owned and managed solely by Wellmind Health.[2]
The Course[edit]
The course was developed with the approval of the creators of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive-Therapy (MBCT)[3], to improve mental wellbeing, reduce depression, anxiety and stress, or low mood, and is the only fully online MBCT course.
In February 2018, Be Mindful was approved to be included in the NHS apps library[4][5] and in June 2019 was added to the EMIS apps library
The course was designed to be completed in patients’ own time, over four weeks or more, comprising of 4 modules, which include assignments and interactive exercises for the patient to complete, with the severity of symptoms being assessed by questionnaire at the beginning and on completion of the course.
Validation[edit]
Many British universities have carried out clinical trial studies into the efficacy of this intervention. A pilot RCT study, supported by the City University of London[6] and the Medical Research Council[7], into the effectiveness of online mindfulness-based cognitive therapy interventions in autistic adults showed a significant decrease in anxiety in these adults after completing the course.[8]
The course has also shown to be an effective intervention for improving mood and reducing stress during pregnancy[9] by an RCT study carried out by the University of Oxford[10] and the University of Southampton[11].
Research by the University of Oxford Department of Psychiatry showed that participation in Be Mindful significantly reduced perceived stress upon completion and remained stable at follow-up, with pre-post effect size equivalent to levels found in other class-based mindfulness programs[12]. Further research reported that perceived stress, anxiety and depression significantly decreased after the Be Mindful course and further decreased at a 1-month follow-up[13]
Testimonies from customers of the efficacy of the program also support these academic findings.[14]
In November 2020, Be Mindful was listed in the Evening Standard's Top 10 Best therapy apps for managing your mental health at home [15] as well as in the InsightCare's Top 10 Health Apps.
