Beast Clans
Beast Clans[1] is an American trading card game based on a post-apocalyptic world ruled by anthropomorphized animals. The game, designed by Lance DeRatafia, was launched in 2017, after a successful Kickstarter campaign.[2]
Game Setting and Story
The game is set 2000 years in the future after a catastrophic earthquake. The continents have shifted, and all humans have disappeared. Meanwhile, animals have evolved, and the world is run by the "Royals" of the six kingdoms: Mountain, Ocean, Desert, Savannah, Jungle, and Marsh. There are also "rebels" that stand in opposition to the royals of the various kingdoms. The conflict between the kingdoms, as well as between the kingdoms and rebels, drives much of the lore and story behind the game.
There have been three comics released surrounding the characters and story for the game.[3]
Gameplay
The game plays similarly to other trading card games and virtual card games, such as Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, and Hearthstone. Both players have a deck of 50 cards, along with a set of three Royal cards, representing the first, second, and third levels of their respective royal. A player's deck is comprised of cards from their Royal's respective kingdom (Mountain, Ocean, Desert, Savannah, Jungle, and Marsh), as well as rebel cards, which can be played in any deck. Each Royal has a unique ability, a criterion for evolving to the next level, and a set amount of "Biomass." Each player starts the game with a first-level royal at 250 life, and a hand of six cards drawn from their deck. Players can play cards from their hand based on the amount of Biomass their Royal has. As players meet their Royal's respective evolution criteria, their royals evolve, increasing the amount of Biomass a player can utilize per turn, and also increasing the power of the Royal's ability. In addition to Royals, there are four card types in Beast Clans: Beasts, Equipment, Castles, and Weather. Beasts are the creatures of Beast Clans, and make up most of the cards in the game. Beasts have "Might" and "Life," as well as other effects, and may attack Royals or an opponent's Beasts directly. When a beast's life is reduced to zero, it is considered slain and discarded. A beast has a biomass cost that must be paid each turn, or else the Beast is "released" and placed into the discard pile. Equipment cards add effects and Might to Beasts and Royals. They also have "durability," which is the number of times they may be used before they are discarded. "Castles" are cards that stay on the battlefield and provide permanent effects or abilities. Both Equipment and Castles have Biomass costs that must be paid every turn. "Weather" cards are one-time effects that occur, and then the card is placed in the discard pile.
Players win the game by reducing their opponent's Royal from 250 life to 0, or by their opponent not being able to draw a card from their deck.
