Beatriz Flamini (born c. 1973) is a Spanish extreme athlete. On 15 April 2023, she emerged after spending 500 days alone in a cave.[1]
Career
Flamini entered the 70-metre (230 ft) deep cave in Granada on 20 November 2021, when she was 48. She was closely monitored by various experts during her challenge. She said she spent the time reading, knitting hats, and exercising.
She described the experience as "excellent" and "unbeatable", but said she experienced auditory hallucinations during her voluntary isolation. She added that she lost track of time after around two months and thought she had only been under the ground between 160 and 170 days. She was monitored by scientists from the universities of Almería, Granada, and Murcia. Her team revealed Flamini did leave the cave for eight days while they fixed a router, which they needed to keep a check on her condition. However, they said she stayed isolated in a tent during this time.[2]
The world record attempt will be turned into a TV documentary. Elena Mera, a spokesperson for the project, said Flamini herself contacted the media production company Dokumalia in 2021, about the idea of documenting the extreme attempt.[3]
