Beautiful Losers (school)

The Beautiful Losers school of artists are the loose group of North American creatives working in different media that showed and socialized around Aaron Rose's Alleged Gallery in the Lower East Side of New York City in the 1990s, and continue to be brought in conversation with one another by curators and each other. The name of the school can be applied to this group as they were the "cast" in the art documentary of the same name by Rose, and as a selection of their works were gathered together in the eponymous traveling exhibition that made stops in cities like San Francisco with temporary installations and a skateable "bowl" or swimming pool replica that audience members were able to skateboard in, in line with some of the skate culture-related subject matter and background of a number of the participating artists. The ethos and material techniques most often associated with this group are a do-it-yourself attitude towards creating, re-appropriating, and presenting artworks and experiences. Barry McGee and the late Margaret Kilgallen were a couple within the group making work with or alongside one other [1], as are photographers Ed and Deanna Templeton who collaborate together currently. Pieces of oral and visual histories from figures observing or working within the group have been made by writer Carlo McCormick [3], photographer Ivory Serra, and photographer / filmmaker Cheryl Dunn. Works by this group were most recently shown together the Now and Then exhibitions sponsored by apparel company RVCA at New York and Los Angeles locations, including The Hole Gallery on The Bowery[2], a previously short-lived home to Rose's Alleged Gallery after it left Ludlow Street.
