Beauty News & The Makeup Breakup (also known as Beauty News) is a YouTube channel by Australian beauty vloggers Hailey O'Bryen and Kat Wilson. The channel gained popularity through its "Makeup Breakup" segment, in which Kat and Hailey destroy makeup and skincare products.[1] Beauty News produces Makeup Breakup videos every Wednesday, along with a twice-weekly (Monday and Friday) series that discusses new beauty product releases. As of July 2018, Beauty News has more than 400,000 subscribers on YouTube and more than 54 million total views.[2]

The Makeup Breakup[edit]

After gaining traction on social media, Beauty News received attention by fashion and beauty media for its makeup destruction videos, featured in a series called "The Makeup Breakup."[3] In this series, Haley and Kat obtain intact makeup or skincare products—eyeshadow palettes, blushes, highlighters, foundations, and more—and destroy them.

While the series was created for entertainment value, the videos typically serve to learn more about the product, including comparing actual weight against claimed weight, evaluating quality, or determining the amount of usable product.[3][4] For example, Kat and Hailey determined that the Chanel Sunkiss Ribbon Blush palette had an excess of 1.82g of product by weighing the product before and after destruction.[3] The duo also put the Kylie Jenner Royal Peach palette to the test in The Makeup Breakup to determine the cause of an unpleasant odor reporter by consumers.[5][6] In Spring 2018, Kat and Hailey destroyed the Fenty Beauty Fairy Bomb, revealing that the product contains 12.11g of highlighter, versus the 10.5g it advertises.[7] In some cases, products have been discovered to have a deficit.

The Makeup Breakup has received mixed reception from the public, with some concerned about wasting product.[8] The Beauty News duo typically do not throw away products after destroying it. In response to concerns, Kat and Haley confirmed that "If it freaks you out that we destroy makeup, it might make you feel better to know that we re-press almost everything and continue to use it."[3]

Their most popular Makeup Breakup video features a Kailijumei lipstick (a translucent lipstick with a flower suspended at the base), having received more than 5.2 million views.[9]
