The Beaverton Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is a community orchestra based in Beaverton in the Portland metropolitan area of the U.S. state of Oregon. Founded in 1984, the non-profit group currently has about 65 musicians led by conductor Travis Hatton.
History[edit]
The orchestra was organized in 1984 by Dr. Charles Encell.[1] The community orchestra was formed with the help of the Beaverton Arts Commission to give local amateur musicians an opportunity to play classical music in a group. By 1992 the orchestra included about 40 musicians and was rehearsing and performing at a local church. [2] In 2008 founding conductor Charles Encell retired [3] and the orchestra's board began a year-long search for a new music director. In 2009 Travis Hatton was invited to lead the orchestra.
