Because International is a nonprofit organization based in Nampa, Idaho[3]. The organization was founded in 2009 and has distributed 250,000 shoes in over 100 countries[2].
History[edit]
Kenton Lee founded Because International after a mission trip to Kenya. “I saw this issue of kids not having shoes or outgrowing shoes, so when I got back to Nampa, Idaho, my hometown, I really wanted to work on something I could do to help”.[4]. The company was founded in 2009. In 2014, Because International produced its first product, the Shoe That Grows. In August of 2015, the Shoe That Grows went viral. In 2019, the company released its second product, Bednet Buddy, and announced its Pursuit program to encourage entrepreneurs to come up with ideas to help those in poverty[2]
Operations[edit]
Because International operates in three ways: products, production, and pursuit. Products: the company produces products like the Shoe That Grows and distributes them to people in need. Production: the organization manufactures products in the countries where they’re distributed most to create jobs. Pursuit: the company works with entrepreneurs to develop their ideas for products so that they can in turn create jobs and fight poverty.[5] Because International produces two products as of 2019, Bednet Buddy and the Shoe That Grows[3].
The Shoe That Grows[edit]
The Shoe That Grows is a show that expands in three places to grow five sizes and is made of durable materials to last for years. The shoe is intended to be used by kids living in poverty. The Shoe That Grows is a shoe that expands five sizes and is intended to be a shoe for children living in poverty.[2][4][6]
Bednet Buddy[edit]
Bednet Buddy is a popup, portable bednet treated with long-lasting insecticide launched in 2019 and designed for children who don’t have anything to attach a traditional mosquito net from..[3][7]
Reception[edit]
Because International received the Platinum Seal of Transparency from GuideStar[1]. It also won the “Prix du coup de cœur” award from the Famae Foundation[8]. The Shoe That Grows went viral in 2015. Demand for a growing shoe led to the creation of successful Kickstarter for a commercial version of the shoe, Expandals, which donate a pair of the Shoe That Grows for every pair of Expandals sold[4].
