Beckerle Lumber is a local family business, that began in 1940, founded in Spring Valley, New York, by Laurence (Larry) Beckerle.

History

The Great Depression starting in 1929 shook the economic foundations of the country and left many people unemployed and struggling to make it from one day to the next. Comfort Coal & Lumber, however, continued to grow as it supplied the products essential to meet local residents fundamental needs - the lumber to build their homes and the coal to heat them. Larry Beckerle had a secure job as vice president of Comfort Coal, splitting his time between the Hackensack NJ and the Spring Valley NY offices.

After 33 years, Laurence Beckerle, the long time manager of the Comfort Coal, Spring Valley Branch, resigned in February 1940. The same month, Larry started up his own business,Beckerle Lumber, purchasing the former Kramer Lumber building, a double bayed warehouse located in the heart of Spring Valley. Just eight days after opening his new business, on March 8, he posted a large half page ad in the Leader and the Orangetown Telegraph announcing that Beckerle Lumber & Supply Co. was the successor to Kramer Lumber and "are Here Ready to Serve You." Through the years there have been challenges, Not the least being two fires in four years resulting in $300,000 worth of damage but the operation continues to this day.
