Rebecca Jo "Becki" Ronen Walenz (born June 10, 1988) is a professional trumpet player, best known for being Miss Kansas 2009. While a student at Kansas State University, Ronen entered the pageant as Miss Flint Hills.[2] As part of her pledge to contribute to community services, she has created a coloring book for children with the proceeds going to scholarship funds.[3] For the talent portion of the Miss America pageant, Ronen played "Stars in a Velvety Sky" on the trumpet. No other Miss America contestant had played trumpet for their talent demonstration in 26 years.[4]
After serving her term as Miss Kansas, Walenz graduated from Kansas State receiving a Bachelors of Music in trumpet performance.[5] She went on to receive a Master of Music degree from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, and received a full scholarship to pursue a Doctor of Music degree at Florida State University.[6] While still a student at Crane, Walenz released her first CD.[7] The CD, titled Concoction was created as an aid to students for learning lesser known pieces.[8] She is an instructor of trumpet at Kansas State University.[9] Walenz has played as Principal Trumpet for the Salina Symphony Orchestra, and worked as an Adjunct Instructor at Kansas Wesleyan University.[5]
In 2014, Walenz was selected as the winner of a contest to appear in a music video for the song “Miss Incredible” by Mark Ballas.[10][11]
