The company is known throughout New York for its coverage in the media regarding various legal issues including gun possession.
History
Bederow Miller history dates back to 2007, when Mark A. Bederow founded the law office, Mark A. Bederow P.C. Bederow had previously worked as a prosecutor at the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. One of the first major cases Bederow worked on was a case for Lindley DeVecchio in 2007.[1] [2] Bederow represented DeVecchio and all the charges were eventually dismissed in November 2007.[3] This was following recorded evidence that contradicted many points made by the prosecution during the case.[4] [5]
In 2008, Bederow commented in the press about the 3 police officers that were found not guilty of killing Sean Bell in Queens, New York City. He spoke about the comparisons of trial by jury against a judge's verdict, especially in these types of shooting cases.[6]
In 2010, Bederow featured in Bloomberg, after one of his clients made a substantial gain on a property in a short period of time.[7] Bederow was the defence lawyer for Jonathan Ryan, a Florida citizen that broke New York State gun laws when he was driving around the state with an unloaded gun and ammo in his glove compartment. In his home state of Florida, this however was legal. The charge of weapons possession in the state would have carried a mandatory 3½-year sentence, but Ryan was found not guilty.[8]
Throughout 2011, Bederow featured various times in the media across New York state, including The New York Times,[9] ABC News,[10] NY Post,[11] [12] CNN and others.[13] All of these features were as his role of attorney in notable trials. Following Bederow's coverage, he featured in in press as an expert commentator for various high profile cases from 2011 onwards.[14] [15]
Bederow Miller's focus on gun felonies continued in 2012, when he defended a citizen who was charged following a dubious gun-carry bust.[16] Ex-Marine Ryan Jerome attempted to check-in his licensed weapon at the Empire State Building, after speaking to ticketing staff about how to go about booking in his weapon. He was arrested for weapons possession and at the time of his arrest could have faced 3 to 15 years in jail.[17] The case drew attention across New York state[18] and led to NYC Councilman Daniel Halloran calling for the charges to be dropped.[19] The New York Times reported in March 2012, that he had taken a plea deal, which meant he served 10 days community service and received a $1,000 fine.[20]
Gun coverage
The expertise within Beberow Miller has led to the firm's senior staff to be interviewed on a regular basis on common and high profile cases.[21] This coverage has spanned printed and online media, as well as TV and radio.[22]
The firm and Bederow have frequently featured on New York radio since 2010, discussing the topic of gun possession within New York. They spoke at length in 2010 about illegal gun possession, and how the sentencing varies dramatically from 1-3 years in the state of New York, depending on small changes in each case.[23] He was first interviewed on NRA News, and featured again in 2011 on a similar subject.[24]
