BeeFest is an annual international festival dedicated to the manufacturing and showcasing of honey and bee-keeping equipment.[1] It is the largest festival of its kind in Southeastern Europe. [2] [3] It is held every September in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. [4] It was established in 2002 by the Association of Bosnian Honey Producers in cooperation with the governments of the Sarajevo Canton and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. [5] It lasts for 7 days. [6]
The festival showcases over 200 honey manufacturers per edition and includes honey tasting programmes; production, adulteration and rheology workshops and a large trade fair of bee-keeping equipment. [7] [8] Countries represented during the 2017 edition include Albania, Australia, Austria, Belize, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Lebanon, Macedonia, Malta, Montenegro, Oman, Poland, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, Russia and the United Kingdom. The first edition was held from 17-21 September 2002 and showcased 70 honey manufacturers from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Former Yugoslavia.[13] The 2006 edition was the first to establish the Honey is Cool programme - a literary and arts competition open to primary school children. [14] The main festival venue is the Alija Izetbegović square in downtown Sarajevo. [15]
