Beech Companies
Beech Companies was started in 1990 by a small group of men and women who sought to improve the North Central, Philadelphia area.[1] The company consists of five organizations located in Philadelphia. They are Beech Business Bank, Beech Community Services, Beech Interplex Inc., Alston Beech Foundation, and the Beech Scholarship Fund.
The Companies
Beech Business Bank specializes in developing low- or moderate-income neighborhoods. They work with the residents to improve the community through entrepreneurship and employment.
Beech Community Services hosts events such as “Jazz on the Ave” Music Festival as well as neighborhood cleanups.[2] They also created the North Philadelphia Black Biz directory.[3]
Beech Interplex Inc. develops and strengthens townhouse neighborhoods, retail and office areas, and educational and administration buildings.
The Alston Beech Foundation provides small program grants to non-profit organizations that work to rejuvenate communities. It was named after Alston who previously served as the vice president of marketing at First Pennsylvania Bank in the 1980s and president of the Philadelphia Board of Education in the 1990s.[4]
The Beech Scholarship Fund awards $1,000 scholarships for minority students of color entering Cheyney University, Community College of Philadelphia, Lincoln University, or Temple University as a full-time freshman.[5]
Beech Companies has operated in the Cecil B. Moore community for over 25 years.[6]
