"Before You Break My Heart" is a song by the English singer Jade. It was released through RCA Records on 12 September 2025 as part of her first solo studio album That's Showbiz Baby (2025). The song was written by Thirlwall, along with Pablo Bowman, and Mike Sabath, the latter of whom also produced it. Additional credits were given to the production team Holland–Dozier–Holland due to the song's interpolation of "Stop! In the Name of Love" by the Supremes.

Background and composition

"Before You Break My Heart" interpolates "Stop! In the Name of Love" by the Supremes (pictured).

"Before You Break My Heart" is a contemporary electronic pop song.[1] The song incorporates elements reminiscent of Motown, particularly in its rhythmic and melodic structure. The song samples vocals from Jade's childhood singing "Stop! In the Name of Love" by the Supremes.[2]

What’s really special about that is the chorus vocal is actually me as a child singing [that song]. It’s about me not forgetting my younger self and losing sight of that in this showbiz world. I was showing Mike [Sabath, producer] loads of different childhood videos [...] and I played him [one of] me dressed as Diana Ross singing "Stop! In the Name of Love" and that just inspired the song.

— Jade, NME[3]

Following the song’s release, Jade revealed that she is "getting no royalties" after being asked about obtaining permission to use the interpolation of "Stop! In the Name of Love" on the track.[4] She also explained that the song pays homage to Diana Ross, whom she described as her favourite artist, by prominently featuring the sample throughout the track.[5][6]

Critical reception

The song was met positively amongst critics and fans. Puah Ziwei of NME described the song as "groovy" and noted Jade’s vocal delivery as "oft-vulnerable."[3] David Cobbald of The Line of Best Fit described the song as "more than well worth the listen" and highlighted its interpolation of "Stop! In the Name of Love", calling it a "perfect example of good sampling."[7] Jett Tattersall of Women in Pop praised the song for not being overly reliant on its interpolation and called it "an album highlight".[1] Liberty Dunworth of NME noted that "Before You Break My Heart" quickly became a favourite amongst fans, with Jade commenting that she did not expect it to be a favourite, adding, "[...] but it’s the one that’s getting the most traction online."[4]

Visualiser

On 12 September 2025, Jade premiered a compilation of visualisers for all tracks on That's Showbiz Baby, describing it as a visual album.[8] On the same day, each visualiser was uploaded individually to Jade's YouTube channel. The visualiser features Jade and her niece, Amara, portraying a younger version of the singer.[2] The video was shot in South Shields by director Niyadre.[9]
