Belisarius: Military Master of the West: Book One: Nika by Peter Keating, first published in 2021, is one of two non-sequence [historical novel]]s, narrating the life of the Eastern Roman general Belisarius in the period of the Emperor Justinian's rule.
The novel primarily draws on History of the Wars, eight books written by Belisarius' secretary Procopius who campaigned with his master. Belisarius: Military Master of the West is written as an autobiography after Procopius asks for Belisarius for his account of the wars.
The novel moves from his early life in the Balkans to Constantinople where he joins the bodyguard of the future Emperor Justinian, later meeting Theodora, the empress to be, and Antonia, whom he later marries. Belisarius begins a successful career with victorious battles against the Persians in the East and is vital in suppressing the 'Nika' revolt. His crowning achievement is the majestic campaign in North Africa reconquering it for the empire from the Vandals. The book closes following Belisarius' swift victory over the Goths in Sicily. Keating hints at Antonina's double life and her dealings with the even more powerful Empress Theodora and their role in prompting his rise to the highest level of military command.
Keating's treatment of Belisarius presents a contrast between the successful military man of action and that of a hopelessly love struck husband. Justinian’s character is equally torn between the governing of the Empire and the political and religious intrigues of his wife Theodora.
Belisarius: Military Master of the West: Book Two: Redux, is due out in the near future.
