Ben Davidson (Haida: tlajang nang kingaas; stlaay q’aalaagaas) (April 6 1976 - August 15, 2020)[1][2] was a Haida artist known for his wood carvings and jewellery. He was a member of the Raven clan.

Davidson's work has been displayed at the Vancouver Art Gallery and the University of Alberta,[3] as well as commissioned by Damien Hirst.[4]

Davidson was also an original member of the Rainbow Creek Dancers (tuul gundlas cyaal xaada), a Haida dance group formed by his father Robert Davidson and his uncle Reg Davidson in 1980.[5]

Early Life

Davidson was raised by a family of well-known carvers. His father is Robert Davidson, and his uncle is Reg Davidson, both of whom he apprenticed under.[6] During his childhood, Davidson often spent time with his father in his studio painting or drawing on large pieces of paper with his sister Sara Florence Davidson. Eventually the siblings moved on to carving on small blocks of wood.[7]

Davidson began his apprenticeship with his father after graduating high school.[2]

Death

Davidson died of a heart attack on August 15, 2020 at the age of 44.[2] On October 15, 2022, a memorial potlatch was held for Davidson during which a totem pole was raised in his honour. The pole was largely carved by Davidson's uncle Reg Davidson. It is located in Old Massett. Davidson was given the name tlajang nang kingaas, meaning "the one who is known far away". He shares this name with his grandfather, Chief Claude Davidson. It was given to him by his grandmother Vivian Davidson in recognition of his worthiness of being a chief.[8][9]
