Benjamin Albert Levasseur Onyshko (born October 18, 1996) is a Canadian professional baseball pitcher in the Seattle Mariners organization. He also played for the Canada national baseball team in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.[1]

Amateur Career[edit]

Onyshko grew up in Winnipeg played baseball at Vauxhall Academy in Vauxhall, Alberta Canada, and in 2014 he was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 16th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft.[2] However, Onyshko didn't sign with the brewers and decided to play College Baseball at Stetson University[3], where he racked up a career total of a 4.19 ERA with 165 strikeouts, 86 walks and a 7-7 record in 139.2 innings.[4] Come 2018, Onyshko got selected in the 24th round of the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft by The Seattle Mariners. Onyshko signed with the Mariners for $5,000 dollars the same year.[5]

Seattle Mariners[edit]

Onyshko began his professional career in 2018 by playing 15 games at the Minor League Baseball level, 12 of those games were with The Everett Aqua Sox and averaged an ERA of 2.63 with 29 strikeouts & 11 walks over 24 innings with a record of 1-0.[6] In 2019, with the West Virginia Power, he played in 38 games and recorded an ERA of 3.99 with 82 strikeouts, 24 walks & 1 save in 70 innings on a 3-4 record.[7] The 2020 season got canceled due to COVID-19, but in 2021, Onyshko got a combined no-hitter for the Canada national baseball team along with Andrew Albers & Brendan McGuigan against the Colombia national baseball team in the qualifying rounds.[8] He also averaged a 5.98 ERA with 75 strikeouts, 25 walks & 2 saves on a 0-5 record in 46 innings, mostly with Everett.[9] Enter 2022 and Onyshko recorded an ERA of 4.36 with 44 strikeouts, 27 walks & a record of 3-2 in 53 innings on 43 games with the Arkansas Travelers.[10] In 2023 for Arkansas, he averaged an ERA of 5.21 with 45 strikeouts, 21 walks in 48 innings for 27 games.[11]
