BenchWarmers is a light-hearted sports news website based in Ireland. It was founded by Neville O'Donoghue in November 2011, originating as a student project at the Cork Institute of Technology, and secured investment from the Irish Examiner in 2015.[1]. Rocket Sports Internet acquired the website from The Irish Times, which had acquired the Irish Examiner[2] in the intervening years, in 2020.[3][4]
BenchWarmers has built a significant audience of over 6m followers on social media on its main Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts as well as via sub-brands created to address different audiences interested in MMA, WWE, Golf, Darts, Rugby & GAA. BenchWarmers is considered to be "one of the biggest, if not the biggest, Irish Facebook pages".[5]
The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission cleared the acquisition of BenchWarmers by Landmark Media, a subsidiary of the Irish Examiner, in 2017[6] and again when the Irish Examiner/Irish Times sold the brand to Rocket Sports Internet in 2020[7].
Fabrizio Romano, the notable football news journalist, writes a weekly column for BenchWarmers.[8]
