Listen to the song Beneath, Between & Behind or Buy it on amazon "Beneath, Between & Behind" is a song by the Canadian rock band Rush, from their second studio album, Fly by Night. According to lead singer Geddy Lee, this was the first Rush song that drummer Neil Peart wrote the lyrics for.[1] Peart would go on to become the main lyricist for the band.

The song's lyrics focus on the history of the United States, and Peart's dissatisfaction with what the country has become.[2] In the chorus, Peart argues that the "shadows," or current leaders, are not the bold visionaries that the founding fathers were, instead cowering in fear. The final line of each verse suggests that throughout history, people couldn't see that the American ideals were slowly fading.

The first verse describes the American victory over England in the Revolutionary War, and the people's subsequent development and westward movement. The second verse alludes to the Industrial Revolution, immigration and the country's growing diversity, and the bold new innovations that have taken place on American soil. The third verse chides the United States for focusing on war and the military instead of the innovative ideas that built the country.[3]
