Benis Egoh

Benis N Egoh is an earth system scientist and global ecologist. Dr. Egoh is also an assistant professor in the Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine. Prior to being at UC Irvine, Dr. Egoh was a principal researcher in South Africa's Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and a scientific officer for the European Commission. She is also currently on the Ecosystem Services Partnership executive committee.

Early life and education

Benis Egoh was born and raised in Cameroon. Dr. Egoh studied Zoology at the University of Uyo in Nigeria, increasing her passion for conservation and the natural environment. She completed her Masters in Conservation Biology from the University of Cape Town in South Africa and her PhD in Zoology at Stellenbosch University in 2008. She spent over 6 years as a researcher before joining the University of California, Irvine as an assistant professor.

Research

Dr. Egoh's research is at the intersection of people and nature, aiming to promote a more sustainable relationship between the two. Specifically, Dr. Egoh researches ecosystem services and how to mitigate the anthropogenic impacts on the natural world. She also is interested in modeling ecosystems and conservation sites, ecosystem restoration, and understanding the ramifications of land degradation on surrounding ecosystems, populations, and wildlife.
