Benjamin C. Fortna

Benjamin C. Fortna is an American historian of the modern Middle East. He is currently Director of the School of Middle Eastern and North African Studies at the University of Arizona.

Education

Fortna received his BA from Yale University. He completed an MA at Columbia University, and a PhD at the University of Chicago, where his supervisor was Rashid Khalidi.

Work

Fortna's first book was Imperial Classroom: Islam, the State and Education in the Late Ottoman Empire. His other publications include Learning to Read in the Late Ottoman Empire and the Early Turkish Republic (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010) and The Circassian: A Life of Eşref Bey, Late Ottoman Insurgent and Special Agent (Hurst and Oxford University Press, 2016).

Before his position at the University of Arizona, Fortna taught at SOAS, University of London.

Personal life

Fortna is the son of theologian Robert T. Fortna and the brother of international relations scholar Virginia Page Fortna.
