Benjamin F. Bowles was a high school principal and founded a college for African Americans in segregated St. Louis, Missouri. He served as principal of Lincoln High School in East St. Louis. The college he started, Douglass University, failed with a decline in his health. Herman Dreer revived it.[1]
Douglass University
Douglass University was a college he founded in St. Louis, Missouri for African Americans. It was located at 4300 West Belle Place. Bowles led it until his health declined. It was reestablished by Herman Dreer.[2]
Death and legacy
W. E. B. DuBois wrote to his wife after his death for an obituary writeup.[3]
