Benjamin Franklin Carroll

Benjamin Franklin Carroll Sr. was born February 17, 1809 in South Carolina, the son of Absolom and Eleanor (Robinson) Carroll of Colleton Co., South Carolina. Benjamin F. Carroll Sr. married Hulda Harper, the daughter of Reverend Edward and Mary (Hudson) Harper, on December 5, 1833 in Copiah Co., Mississippi. Benjamin F. Carroll Sr. represented Lauderdale Co., Mississippi in 1847 in the Mississippi Legislature and at one point was a Colonel in the Mississippi State Militia. Benjamin and Hulda Carroll left Lauderdale Co., Mississippi and arrived in Harrison Co., Texas circa 1848 before relocating to Navarro Co., Texas circa 1852 where they settled west of the town of Dresden. Benjamin F. Carroll Sr. was a large land and slave owner in Navarro Co. and was a man of many talents; he was a Mason, he operated a blacksmith shop, served as postmaster, school teacher, county judge, and in 1858 he was elected to the 7th Texas Legislature. A small school was located on the Carroll farm, known as the Carroll School, and to this day, the small creek that was near their home is still known as the Carroll Branch. Benjamin Franklin Carroll Sr. died July 9, 1869 and Hulda (Harper) Carroll died July 5, 1901; they are both buried in the Carroll Family Cemetery, Navarro County, Texas.
