Benjamin Axel Mugema (born 14 July 1989) is a Ugandan poet and management consultant who is currently working at professional services firm Deloitte. He is currently a Commonwealth Scholar in International Relations and Diplomacy at Staffordshire University and was a 2015 recipient of the Mandela Washington Fellowship in Civic Leadership.[1] at Rutgers, State University of New Jersey. Benjamin is also an award-winning poet.

Early life

Benjamin was born in Kisoro, Uganda to a Rwandan mother and Ugandan father and attended King's College Budo and St. Lawrence Academy in Uganda. In 2014, Benjamin graduated from Makerere University, Kampala, having joined Deloitte as a pre-graduate associate in 2013. Benjamin attended Rutgers, State University of New Jersey in 2015 as a Mandela Washington Fellow[2] and is currently a Commonwealth Scholar at Staffordshire University.

Career

Before joining Makerere University, Benjamin read Architecture and Environmental Design at Uganda Martyrs University where he co-created the Environmental Club with Dr. David Tshimba. In 2009, he was selected to represent Uganda at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Youth Programme in Nairobi. Benjamin also spoke at the Education without Borders (EWB) conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

In 2012, Benjamin won the "Allons en France" contest at Makerere University and represented Uganda in Paris, at a two-week youth gathering on human rights and freedoms. Benjamin contributed to the development of the youth charter on human rights. He also attended and spoke at the International Students' Week in Ilmenau (ISWI), in 2013.

In July 2013, as a senior at Makerere University, Benjamin was recruited by professional services firm Deloitte as an audit associate. He has worked with Deloitte in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and South Sudan. Benjamin spoke at the Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, 2014 as a Young Energy Leader. He was a facilitator and speaker at the Global Landscapes Forum in Lima, Peru in 2014[3]. He partly led the development of the Deloitte practice in Burundi in 2016 and is currently a Management and Strategy consultant at Deloitte in Uganda.

Benjamin is also an award-winning poet. His anthology, *Memoirs of a Minor*, won the National Poetry Book of the Year at the Uganda National Book Trust (NABOTU) awards in September 2010[4]. He won the Indiafrica Essay Competition in 2012[5]

Personal life

Benjamin lives in Kampala, Uganda and is married to Nadege Nininahazwe, a Burundian human resources professional, and they have one daughter. He is fluent in French and English.
