Benjamin W. Starnes

Benjamin W. Starnes, MD, FACS (born June 2, 1966) is an American Vascular Surgeon. He holds the position of Professor and Chief, Division of Vascular Surgery and Vice Chair for the Department of Surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle.[1] He is also the Alexander Whitehill Clowes Endowed Chair of Vascular Surgery at UW. His main site of practice is at Harborview Medical Center, one of the nation’s leading Level 1 Trauma Centers.[2] Starnes was born in Odessa, Delaware to Ronald W. and Martha E. Starnes.[3][4] His formal education includes a Bachelor of Science degree from Albright College in Reading, PA, a Medical Doctor degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Surgical Intern and Resident at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C. (1998) and Vascular Surgery Fellow at both Walter Reed and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery and holds special qualifications in Vascular Surgery.

Starnes spent 15 years of distinguished service on Active Duty with the United States Army Medical Corps. He was honorably discharged in June 2007 as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Starnes was first assigned as a general surgeon to the 212th MASH in Wiesbaden, Germany. From there he was deployed to Albania, Macedonia and Kosovo. He then was assigned as a Vascular Fellow to Walter Reed Army Medical Center. During that time, he led a surgical team to the scene of the attack on the Pentagon, September 11, 2001, and was recognized by First Lady Laura Bush on national television on September 12, 2001.[5][6] His experience that day led him to initiate a project with his brother, Lincoln, a Fed Ex courier and writer, to publish a book about the events that day entitled, “American Phoenix; Heroes of the Pentagon on 9/11” which reached as high as #7 on Amazon’s Best Seller List for books on terrorism.

He was assigned as a vascular surgeon to Madigan Army Medical Center, Fort Lewis, WA where he served as Director, Endovascular Surgery and Director, Vascular Surgery Research. During his time at MAMC, he was deployed to Kirkuk, Iraq. He conducted Combat Air-Land Assault on an airfield in Bashur, Iraq as part of the Northern Invasion in support of the 173rd Airborne Brigade from Vicenza, Italy[7]. He was again deployed to Kirkuk, Iraq with the 250th Forward Surgical Team in January 2004.

His military awards are numerous and include the following: Combat Medical Badge, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal (6 times), the Army Achievement Medal, National Service Defense Ribbon with Bronze Star Device, Kosovo Campaign Medal with Bronze Star Device (2 tours), Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal with Arrowhead Device (Combat Air-Land Assault), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Reserve Component Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Army Overseas Service Ribbon and NATO (Kosovo) Medal (twice).

Starnes was an Eagle Scout and went on to receive numerous awards both military and civilian. He is a member of many military and civilian professional organizations. He has been actively involved in research both as principal and associate investigator, has published over 140 journal articles[8], has provided editorial service to nearly a dozen professional medical journals, authored numerous textbook chapters and has published a movie and several podcasts.

To his credit are consultant activities, a medical invention with issued patents, and serving as a member of medical and data safety monitoring boards. He has over 300 presentations in not only this country but fourteen others on five continents including Australia, Lithuania, Germany, Japan and China. He has had the honor of being invited to deliver Grand Rounds at 24 prestigious institutions for visiting professorships.

Starnes and his wife Marjorie have two daughters and reside in Seattle, Washington.
