Benjamin Warrington

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Benjamin Warrington was a resident and City Council member in 19th-century Nauvoo, Illinois.

Nauvoo

Warrington owned property near what became part of Nauvoo before 1843.[1][2] He was among several landowners who subdivided their land and sold it to the influx of residents around 1840.[3]

Warrington was elected to the Nauvoo City Council, despite not being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served on the Council from 1834 to 1855.[3][4] In 1844, he was the lone council member to vote against the destruction of the Nauvoo Expositor press, arguing instead for fining the publishers $3,000 for libel and giving them a chance to desist.[3][5][6] Backlash against the order to destroy the Expositor press led to Smith's arrest and ultimately, his death at the hands of a mob while awaiting trial.

Due to his being a non-Mormon but having a reputation for being neutral or sympathetic to the Mormons, Warrington was later made a member of the grand jury that eventually indicted nine men for Smith's murder.[4]
