Bennet Carr (born December 1970) is an English headteacher and educational leader. He has served as Headmaster of King Edward VI School, Stratford‑upon‑Avon, since September 2010 [1]

Education

Carr studied Geography at the University of London, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He later completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH)[2]. In 2022, he was awarded a Farmington Institute Scholarship at the University of Oxford, undertaking research into strategic leadership in schools.

Teaching and leadership career

Carr began his teaching career at The Bishop’s Stortford High School, where he served as Assistant Head and Head of Sixth Form from 1993 to 2002. He subsequently became Deputy Headmaster at St Olave’s Grammar School, a post he held from 2002 until 2010. In 2010, Carr was appointed Headmaster of King Edward VI School, Stratford‑upon‑Avon, a selective grammar school educating boys aged 11–16 with a co‑educational sixth form[3].

Recognition

In 2020, The Sunday Times named King Edward VI School State Secondary School of the Decade[4], citing improved academic performance over a ten‑year period. The school has also been named State Secondary School of the Year (West Midlands) on multiple occasions and State Secondary School of the Year for Academic Excellence (West Midlands) in successive editions of The Sunday Times Parent Power guide[5][6]. In an analysis published by The Sunday Times based on five years of Ofsted Parent View data, the school was identified as the joint‑happiest secondary schools in England, with 99% of parents agreeing that their child was happy at the school[7].

Professional and governance roles

Carr has held a number of external leadership and governance roles in education. He served as Chair of the Grammar School Heads Association from 2022 to 2024[8]. He is a Community Governor and Chair of the Education Committee at the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe[9], a Council Member of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust[10], a Committee Member for the Friends of the Guild Chapel [11]and has served since 2012 as a trustee of the Hampton Lucy Educational Trust[12], an educational charity providing grants to young people in Warwickshire.

Charitable activity

Carr has been involved in fundraising for the Beer‑Harris Memorial Trust, supporting the charity through sponsored running events. These have included completing five marathons and the Grim Challenge (Grim 8)[13][14].
