Bennie Blue is an unsigned and independent alternative band from Malta. They released multiple singles in 2020 and 2021 and are expected to release their first EP in 2022 after having recorded at Temple Studios. Members include Owen Caruana (guitarist), Daniel Ellul (bassist), Hadrien Meyer (Vocalist), and Andrew Debono (drummer)[1].
History[edit]
Bennie Blue, formerly 'Sleeping Pills' duo, was created in 2019. The band rebranded itself with the onboarding of singer-songwriter Hadrien. Soon after, the band released its first single 'Engagement Party', a mellow acoustic song with poetic lyrics and vulnerable vocals[2]. The song was immediately successful with Maltese audiences, however, it struggled to make it into mainstream playlists and obtain radio play. The band then decided to incorporate drummer Andrew Debono into the band and six months later they released 'Pink Tremolo'[3]. Contrastingly to their previous single, this was filled with guitar effects, wider vocals ranges, and catchy melodies. The song was uplifting and upbeat enough to get played on Bay Radio (Malta's most popular radio station). By March 2021, the band would release 'Softening of the Brain'[4], featuring Owen Caruana's grandmother accompanied by electronic melodies and a lo-fi drum beat. Here, the band demonstrated yet another side to their unique sound.
Following the release of the singles, Bennie Blue went on a local tour around Malta. They played a total of 2 festivals and 4 gigs over the summer of 2021 ranging from the renowned Spazju Kreattiv (Saint James Cavalier Cultural Centre) to indie music venue 'Hole in the Wall'. The vast majority of their shows were sold out[5]. The band has gone quiet since releasing only a few short videos of new songs on Instagram stories and pictures of what seems to be Temple Studios (Malta). However, during this time they were featured in surf magazine 'BOMBA'
Musical Style[edit]
The band's sound has been described as alternative and indie rock. The members have admitted their differences in musical taste and thus, getting their influences from a variation of artists in different genres. Hadrien's individual releases have proven to be folk and country influenced, with obvious influences from The Milk Carton Kids and Elliott Smith. However, the rest of the band's musical tastes and influences are yet to be determined. In a 2021 interview for BOMBA Magazine the band was described as having 'awesome rock' and having 'nailed' a 'laid back Jack Johnson / Ben Howard vibe'.[6]
