Bernd Klewitz
Bernd Klewitz[1] (born 1950) Privatdozent - Dr. phil. habil is an educational psychologist, whose work focuses on science-oriented teaching and learning English as a foreign language in different contexts. Having spent a decade in English speaking countries such as Australia, the UK and the US, he disposes of native-like English skills. For several years he has been teaching in the Humanities at the German universities of Jena and Göttingen. Bernd Klewitz has published widely known practice-oriented textbooks and manuals that focus on authentic language learning with a major accent on Instructional Scaffolding. His books offer deep insights into CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) based on topics of politics and economy. Furthermore, in his newest publication, he advocates literature as an independent subject of bilingual language teaching and learning (Literary CLIL, 2019) and has developed a Methodology of Bilingual Teaching (CLIL, 2021).
Career[edit]
Trained as a grammar school teacher, he gained his PhD in Oral History[2] at the Philipps-University Marburg and, after teaching at private and comprehensive schools in the State of Hesse, he worked as a teacher trainer in Marburg. Pedagogical experiences abroad started with his employment in two schools in Edinburgh,[3] followed by a position as DAAD lecturer in Sheffield,[4] a four-year appointment as the German Language Advisor in the Victorian Ministry of Education in Melbourne[5] and a three-year period at the Goethe Institute in Chicago[6] as a Teacher Trainer and Language Consultant. As an advisor and regional coordinator for the Hesse Ministry of Education in Wiesbaden he supported the introduction of the Language Core Curriculum[7] and advised school principals implementing competence-oriented teaching strategies. Overall, he taught English as a Foreign Language, Social Studies and History and Bilingual Classes at various German grammar schools. He also conducted seminars about Scaffolding and CLIL at Göttingen and Jena, where he acquired his habilitation about content-based language skills.[8]

His publications connect both his teaching focus on language acquisition and the study of politics and history. More recently he has specialised in teaching strategies (Scaffolding) and the development of bilingual study books.
