Bernstein Medical is an out-patient medical treatment center specializing in medical and surgical hair restoration, including follicular unit hair transplants (FUT), follicular unit extraction (FUE), and robotic-assisted FUE hair transplants (Robotic FUE)[1][2][3]

Dr. Robert M. Bernstein founded the hair loss treatment center in New York City in 2005 and moved into the current facility in mid-town Manhattan in 2007.[4][5] Bernstein, MD, MBA, FAAD, FISHRS, is a Board Certified dermatologist.[6] and Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in New York where he is involved in clinical research and teaching.[7][8]

Michael Wolfeld, MD FACS, the co-director of Bernstein Medical, is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and an Associate Clinical Professor at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.

The center has been a fully accredited office-based surgical center by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) for over 10 years. In 2013, the company was named the best small or medium-sized company to work for in New York State by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). Bernstein Medical is the third facility in the world to perform robotic hair transplantation.[9] It is a beta-test site for Restoration Robotics, Inc. the company that developed the robotic hair transplant system. The center works with Dr. Angela Christiano of Columbia University on her research in hair cloning.[citation needed]

Bernstein is recognized for his work in the field of surgical hair restoration,[10] primarily in the areas of Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).[11] He described Follicular Transplantation in 1995[12][13] and then, together with William R. Rassman, M.D., detailed the techniques of FUT and FUE in a series of medical publications.

Bernstein is the author and co-author of numerous medical publications, books and book chapters on surgical hair restoration, including Hair Loss and Replacement for Dummies. He was one of the first surgeons to use robotic technology in hair transplant procedures.[14]

In the Millennium Paper of Dermatologic Surgery, A History of Dermatologic Surgery in the United States, Dr. Bernstein was cited as one of the three physicians to have played a leading role in hair transplantation during 1980's and 1990's.[15] In 2001, Bernstein was presented with the Platinum Follicle Award of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), the society's highest award for basic science research.[16]
