Berta Jayo
Berta Jayo (born 1971) is a Spanish artist.
Early life and education
Jayo has a degree in fine arts from the University of the Basque Country (1991-1996) and was a fine art teacher from 1996 to 2000. She was chosen to undertake the first year of postgraduate study at Chelsea College of Art and Design in London, then the MA in fine art (2000-2002). She has also participated in many programs, such as ISCP New York (International Studio and Curatorial program) (2004-2005).
Work
Jayo's media exhibitions began in 2000. A wall installation called "All is done" makes us think about the meaning of life. In 2002, the series "Holes" was created, in which she drills canvas and other objects. She participated in the "Beauty and sadness" collective exhibition in Frankfurt and Portugal with Juan Uslé, Gómez Bueno and others, with children’s dresses made with supermarket bags. Other relevant work is the series of paintings called "Making Love" from 2004, in which couples make love on canvas. She said it was "a Yves Klein heritage". At the same time, the series "Nudes" appeared, in which she takes photographs after people undress. In 2008 Jayo began to make nun dresses with colorful fabric, camouflage, polka dot, etc. We can see groups of people, individuals, or herself wearing the nun dresses in public spaces, or entering international fairs or famous museums by paying the entrance fee. Museums like Guggenheim Bilbao, Tate Modern, MoMa or Louvre Paris. This is the most extensive and best-known work of the artist.
Jayo was included in the group of the international itinerant museums exhibition: "Artists of XX and XXI Century". She also participates in other exhibitions like "ELLAS"(they) with Ouka Leele, Eva Lootz or Marina Nuñez. Jayo gives to the concept of performance a special character, like "Holidays" in which she invites people randomly selected to go on holiday. The hotel and place are chosen by the artist, and the result is a picture of the people taken by someone inside the city. People are selected from social networks. One exhibition is called "Heart and soul" at El Kubo, next to Kiki Smith and Rebecca Horn among others. Exhibition view. In 2015 she presents her first architectural project, and in 2016 she shows a nun sleeping for two hours in a group show at La Juan Gallery Madrid, the first live art space in Spain. The most recent work "A call to humanity" is a series of photo performances and videos.
Published books
- Sabático. (Sabbatical). 2013 - This vitalistic work states that we have to move forward with truth and self-confidence and that we can all be creative because we are unique. From the formal point of view, it has a general structure that is compartmentalized, keeping an overall unity, with a poetic, artistic, philosophical, educational, everyday, idealistic and healing touch.
- Poamario. (mixwords). 2015 - It is a book that opens the heart. It contains a singular energy made of wordplays, conceptual games, antithesis, oxymoron or paronomasia.
Curational projects
From 1996 Jayo organizes shows in which she includes artists like Yoshiaki Kaihatsu or Tom Skipp.
