Bertie Hayden

Bertie "Big Race" Hayden (born 17 February 1946, in Johannesburg, the Union of South Africa.[1]) is a South African jockey in thoroughbred racing. He won the Durban July Handicap three times and the J&B Met five times. After retirement in 1991, he worked as a racehorse trainer until 2005. He died on 4 May 2014[1].

Career[edit]

Bertie Hayden began his career at the age of fourteen as an apprentice for racehorse trainer Robert Jackson, where he achieved his first win on Copper Rule[2] and earned the distinction of champion apprentice. Next, he rode for Harold "Tiger" Wright, and subsequently, a Cape Town based trainer, Alec Soteriadis[3]. He began working for Syd Laird in 1971. As Syd Laird's jockey, Hayden won the Durban July in 1971 on Mazarin. In 1972, he won the J&B Met on Force Ten. In 1973, he won both the Queen's Plate and the Durban July on Yataghan. The following year, he won the J&B Met a second time, also on Yataghan. In 1977, he won the J&B Met for the third time on Bahadur. In 1978, Hayden won both the J&B Met and the Durban July, riding Politician. In 1979, he won his fifth J&B Met, also on Politician[1]. Following a back injury, he had to take a three year break from racing between 1985 and 1988. In 1991, he ended his career as a jockey and took up racehorse training[3]. In 2004, he suffered a stroke and was forced to quit the racing world[1]
