Besnik Gashi (born 30 May 1985 in Hajvalia)[1] is a Swedish ski jumper of Kosovar origin. He is a multiple medalist at the Swedish Senior National Championships and has also earned medals at the junior nationals. Gashi represented the Sweden national ski jumping team. After retiring from ski jumping, he transitioned to basketball as both a player and coach.
Besnik Gashi competed in official international ski jumping events under the auspices of the International Ski Federation from 2002 to 2006. During this period, he participated in the Continental Cup and Summer Continental Cup, securing points in the overall standings of both series on several occasions.
He competed twice at the Junior World Championships, achieving his best results in 2003: 12th place in the individual event and 5th place in the team event with the Swedish team.
Throughout his career, Gashi won 9 medals at the Swedish Senior National Championships (including 4 golds), with 4 in individual events (2 silvers and 2 bronzes), and 1 medal at the Summer Swedish Senior Championships (a team gold). He also collected multiple medals at the Swedish Junior National Championships.
Early career (to 2000)
Gashi moved to Sweden in 1991.[1] He began ski jumping during primary school, encouraged by a classmate,[2] despite having no prior experience with skiing. He quickly progressed, training at the Kvarnberget complex in Falun.[3]
In 2000, he won a bronze medal at the Swedish Junior National Championships.[3]
Initially, Gashi competed in junior events in Sweden, including the Falu Plast Cup[4] and contests in the Svenska Cup (Swedish Cup) series.[5][6]
2000/2001 season
In the 2000/2001 season, Gashi placed 5th in the Svenska Cup junior overall standings with 135 points. At the Swedish Junior National Championships in Sysslebäck, he finished 6th.[7] He also competed in the Swedish Junior Championships for younger athletes, placing 4th, and at the Swedish Senior National Championships, where he took 9th.[3]
2001/2002 season
In August 2001, Gashi competed in Lomnice nad Popelkou, Czech Republic, finishing 15th among 20 juniors and 56th among 79 seniors.[8] During the 2001/2002 winter season, he participated in Svenska Cup events for both juniors and seniors.[9][10][11]
He debuted in official FIS international competitions in January 2002,[12] at the Junior World Championships. On 24 January, in the team event at Langenwaldschanze in Schonach im Schwarzwald, he and teammates Isak Grimholm, Johan Erikson, and Andreas Arén placed 9th; individually, he scored 7th in his group in the first round but fell to 14th after a fall in the second.[13] Two days later, on 26 January, he finished 35th in the individual event on the same hill.[14]
On 16 February 2002, at the Swedish Senior National Championships on a medium hill, Gashi was 2nd after a 74-meter first jump but dropped to 4th after a weaker second round, overtaken by Grimholm and Arén.[15] On 24 March, at the normal hill nationals, he placed 12th among 22 competitors.[16] That year, he earned his second bronze at the Swedish Junior Championships.[3]
In March 2002, Gashi debuted in the Continental Cup in Vikersund, Norway, placing 64th,[17] 51st,[12] and 55th across three contests.[18]
2002/2003 season
On 4 August 2002, Gashi debuted in the Summer Continental Cup[12] in Oberstdorf, finishing last (15th) in the team event with teammates Johan Erikson, Andreas Arén, and Kristoffer Jåfs.[19] The previous day, he placed 105th individually, tying with Erikson.[20] On 31 August in Falun, he took 46th in his final Summer Continental Cup event that year.[12]
In the 2002/2003 season, Gashi competed again in the Svenska Cup for both juniors[21][22] and seniors.[23]
On 24 January 2003, at the Swedish Senior National Championships on a medium hill, he was 2nd after the first round but finished 6th after a weaker second jump.[24] Two days later, on 26 January, on a normal hill, he led after the first round but was overtaken by Johan Erikson in the second, earning his first senior championship medal – a silver.[25]
In February 2003, Gashi competed in the Sollefteå Junior World Championships.[12] On 6 February, with teammates Andreas Arén, Johan Erikson, and Isak Grimholm, he achieved Sweden's best 21st-century result in the team event, placing 5th.[26] On 8 February, he finished 12th individually, the top Swede in the event.[27]
In the 2002/2003 Continental Cup, Gashi competed in seven events, scoring points in three. His first points came on 15 February 2003 in Eisenerz, Austria (25th), followed by 16 February (28th) there, and 15 March in Stryn, Norway (21st – his best winter Continental Cup result).[12] He earned 19 points, finishing 154th overall (second-best Swede behind Jonas Nordin, 104th with 53 points).[28]
On 2 March 2003, at the Swedish Senior Championships on a large hill, Gashi took silver individually (behind Erikson)[29] and won team gold with Holmens IF (with Erikson and Arén).[30] The previous day, 1 March, at the junior nationals on a normal hill, he won gold both individually and with his team.[31]
2003/2004 season
Gashi began the 2003/2004 international season in July, competing in eight of ten Summer Continental Cup events (missing Garmisch-Partenkirchen). He scored points four times: 17th on 19 July in Calgary (his best), 22nd on 20 July there, 28th on 25 July in Park City, and 18th on 26 July in Park City.[12] With 39 points, he finished 51st overall.[32]
On 18 January 2004, at the Swedish Senior Championships on a normal hill, he was 4th after the first round but finished 6th individually; with Holmens IF (Erikson and Arén), he won team gold – his second senior title.[33] On 1 February, on a large hill, he fell from 8th to 7th.[34]
His only winter FIS event was the Continental Cup in Zakopane on 8 February 2004, where he placed 66th.[12]
2004/2005 season
Gashi's sole international outing in 2004/2005 was in summer 2004 at the Summer Continental Cup in Lillehammer, placing 57th on 20 August and 60th on 21 August.[12]
On 30 January 2005, at the Swedish Senior Championships on a large hill, he finished 6th individually among 13 and took team silver with Holmens IF (with Alexander Mitz and Erikson).[35] On 13 February, on a normal hill, he earned bronze individually, behind Mitz and Grimholm.[36]
2005/2006 season
In summer 2005, Gashi competed in two Summer Continental Cup events in Lillehammer, placing 45th on 20 August and 49th on 21 August.[12]
On 9 October 2005, at the Summer Swedish Senior Championships on a normal hill, he finished 4th individually and won team gold with Holmens IF (Erikson and Mitz) – his first summer title.[37]
In winter, he entered six Continental Cup events, with his best results in Vikersund: 45th on 4 March 2006 and 47th on 5 March – his final FIS international appearances.[12]
On 26 February 2006, at the Swedish Senior Championships on a large hill, he took bronze individually (behind Erikson and Arén) and won team gold with Holmens IF (Erikson and Arén).[38] On 12 March, on a normal hill, he placed 4th individually and won team silver with Holmens IF (Fredrik Balkåsen and Sebastian Ekman).[39]
Post-ski jumping career (since 2006)
After retiring from ski jumping, Besnik Gashi became a basketball coach. As of 2014, he coached youth teams at Falu Basket in Sweden[40] and played as a forward in lower Swedish leagues for the same club.[41]

Personal life
Besnik Gashi was born in what is now Kosovo. At age 6, he moved with his family to Sweden, initially living in Falun and later Östersund. He has an older brother and speaks English and Albanian.[3]
